Trails: Saddle Creek Trail #1776
Itinerary: Join us for an overnight camping trip at Freezeout Trailhead (TH). Our focus will be on moving rocks off the trail. We recently cleared this section, but there are still softball- and football-sized rocks on the switchbacks leading down to the Bench Trail, making it difficult for stock to navigate. We’ll be bringing tools specifically designed for trail and rock work.
We'll hike approximately three miles up the Saddle Creek Trail before we start working, and we’ll need to coordinate our efforts due to the multiple switchbacks. Get ready for some rolling rocks!
Please bring your usual personal work gear. Also, let me know your favorite tool for this type of work, and I'll make sure you have it. This is "Tread Work." Feel free to join us for one day or both!
Bring your own food and water. Trip is eligible for camping per diem.
Gear Packing List: Late Winter- Spring conditions. Stock support per person is 35lb max.
Crew Leader: Lantz Hughes
Difficulty Rating : Difficult-Strenuous
You should have experience with backpacking and be in good hiking condition with broken-in and tested gear. This is a remote backcountry project, so injuries such as sprains and blisters or even extreme fatigue from not being properly conditioned can quickly become a big safety issue.
Hike: 5/5 Strenuous: Prepare for a steep ascent to Freezeout saddle. Stock can pack gear up to 35 lbs.
Project Work: 4/5 Strenuous. Treadwork and moving rock off trail.
Hazards: Scree/Talus , Low Water Availability, Heat/Prolonged Sun Exposure, Rattlesnakes
