Learning by Doing

Volunteers use rope rigging training to salvage and secure the BC Creek Bridge.

WMHCTA Trainings and Certifications offer hands-on training by instructors with decades of wilderness experience. Best of all, they are free to members.

  • We will use the USFS Developing Thinking Sawyers curriculum for this training.  It includes modules on how the saws work, how to maintain them and use them in the field to address all the typical situations found when a tree falls across the trail.  This is a bucking only class and does not include tree falling.

  • Learn more about safely using, packing, and working around stock in the backcountry.

  • We will discuss and demonstrate how mechanical advantage systems work and how they can be used to move large logs from the trails.  There will be a hands-on practice session afterwards. 

  • Basic first aid training for responding to medical issues in the backcountry.

  • This training session is designed to familiarize students with the basics of using smartphone mapping apps and GPS units to find their way in the backcountry.  We will discuss and practice setting waypoints, marking tracks, and determining routes to a destination. 

  • Item Along with smartphones and handheld radios we will go over the use of satellite communication devices (e.g Garmin InReach).  We will discuss the fundamentals of sending and receiving messages from them and also of linking the devices to your smartphone.
